With growth resuming in the polyurethanes industry, Maastricht is the place to meet up and explore new avenues for development with key players in urethanes
By Louise McHenry, UTI reporter
London – The leading international exhibition and conference for the global polyurethanes industry, UTECH, returns this year to the Maastricht Exhibition and Conference Centre (MECC) in Maastricht, the Netherlands, from 17- 19 April 2012.
Organised by Crain Communications Ltd, the publisher of Urethanes Technology International, the event brings together top decision-makers from across the sector.
The three-day meeting sees more than 120 suppliers of raw materials, equipment and services to the polyurethane market take part in the exhibition, giving visitors the opportunity to network with a range of international companies, and evaluate a host of products and services, as described in our preview, pp28-40.
In 2009, the last time the UTECH Europe event was held, almost 3000 exhibition visitors and conference delegates came from more than 85 different countries worldwide, and the organisers are expecting the 2012 event to be even bigger and busier than ever.
The UTECH Europe 2012 conference will open with a session celebrating the 75th anniversary of Otto Bayer’s discovery of polyurethane.
A session titled ‘Green Chemistry,’ detailing the latest advances in sustainable manufacturing processes for key PU raw materials, will open the meeting’s technical programme. The conference, with over 90 papers by speakers from all corners of the global industry, will focus on new developments, including novel catalysts and additives for flexible foam to the latest in blowing agents for rigid foam types.
Other highlights from the conference programme include a session from the Polyurea Development Association Europe on the latest commercial and technical developments in the polyurea market. Also, ISOPA (the European Diisocyanate and Polyols Producers Association) will present the most recent updates on safety, health and sustainability issues.
Our listing highlighting what is on display at UTECH Europe starts below. Any exhibitors not listed here are invited to send in information for UTI to use in its coverage in the April/May issue, out just before UTECH.
Free shuttle service
The organisers of UTECH Europe 2012 will run a free bus service to MECC Maastricht from Brussels airport, 16-19 April. A free shuttle bus will also run from local hotels to the MECC.

FORMAT Stand 2260 Format Messtechnik GmbH will show its SubCASE HT pot-life and curing monitor for reactive plastics based on PU formulations, epoxy and polyester resins. It will also presents its Resimat 150 test device for recovery measurement of viscoelastic foams.
SubCASE HT combines dielectric polarisation measurement and temperature measurement of reactive test samples, Format says. The dielectric polarisation reveals the electro-chemical process during compound formation and crosslinking, from which conclusions can be drawn regarding the pot life and the curing behaviour of the material.
Resimat 150 can be used for development as well as for quality-assurance testing of viscoelastic foams. During the measurement cycle, a test sample is compressed vertically by means of a pressure plate onto an adjustable reference surface.
While being compressed the restoring force of the foam is measured. After the hold time the sample gradually recovers from the deformation, regaining its original shape. The recovery process is continuously recorded.
Format will also show its Foamat foam qualification system for development, quality control, as well as for production control, as well as its Sonic Joker ultrasonic sensor for precision distance and thickness measurement in quality control.
GAMA Stand 2240 At UTECH Europe 2012, GAMA - Garraf Maquinaria of Sitges, Spain, will be displaying its latest spray equipment for polyurethane foam and polyurea applications.
The GAMA G-50H, part of the company’s ‘evolution’ series, has been designed to fulfil the demanding requirements of industrial foam-in-place applications of two component systems requiring high dosing precision to ensure the best mixing quality of the chemicals, the company says.
GAMA says no pump change is needed for different applications – the machine can be used for polyurethane spraying (20kg/min output at 140 bar pressure), foam pouring (26kg/min at 110 bar pressure) and polyurea and coatings spraying (12kg/min at 240 bar pressure).

The improved version of the classic RTM process gives users unlimited capacities for producing large volumes, as a result of the degree of automation and cycle time, the German equipment manufacturer says.
Hennecke will be introducing a new kind of metering machine for extremely small outputs. The system can be used in the application of formed-in-place foam gaskets where the high pressure metering of particularly reactive raw materials enables different process steps to be combined effectively based on a synchronised cycle time. The new MT 3 mixhead for very small outputs is ideal for outputs starting at 1.5 g/s per component, according to the company.
HONEYWELL Stand 1740 Honeywell will launch its Solstice liquid blowing agent, the most recent addition to its family of materials with low global warming potential (GWP). Solstice can be used in a variety of insulation applications including spray-foam, foam insulating panels and refrigerator insulation, Honeywell says. It claims that use of the new material can make refrigerators up to 10 to 12 percent more energy efficient than those insulated by hydrocarbon-blown foam, and more than 2 percent more energy efficient than those with HFC-245fa.
In residential and commercial building spray-applied insulating foam, Solstice provides a 5-percent improvement in thermal insulation value over HFC-245fa-based spray foam, Honeywell Fluorine Products says.
Solstice has an extremely short atmospheric lifetime of about 26 days. It has an ultra-low GWP of less than 7 and has no impact on ozone-layer depletion.
Honeywell says that because Solstice liquid blowing agent is non-flammable, it does not require expensive explosion-proof equipment and handling, unlike hydrocarbon alternatives. It is also a near drop-in replacement for today’s most commonly used blowing agents.
The company will also show its Enovate 245fa blowing agent.
HUNTSMAN Stand 1210 Huntsman Polyurethanes and Huntsman Performance Products will be exhibiting together.
