California, US – Algenesis has received $1.5m from the US Department of Defense’s distributed manufacturing programme (DBMIP). The cash will support the development of a new domestic facility to produce diisocyanates. The location of the facility is yet to be determined.
The DBIMP initiative is designed to bolster the US bioeconomy. The Algenesis award is one of 12 that have just been announced, bringing the total number of awards made thus far to 25, and the overall funding to $42m.
Algenesis said the planned facility will play a “crucial role” in establishing a reliable domestic supply of diisocyanates. It said it should strengthen the US bioindustrial manufacturing sector, enhancing supply chain stability.
“The bioindustrial manufacturing industry embodies the American values of innovation and entrepreneurship that are essential to a flourishing domestic industrial base,” said Aprille Ericsson, assistant secretary of defense for science & technology. “These awards not only support the commercial viability of bioproduction and biobased materials, but also empower this industry to contribute to national security as well as our economic prosperity.”
