Washington, DC – The American Chemistry Council has issued a statement in response to the Give Toxics the Boot campaign, which focuses on flame retardants and the Toxic Substance Control Act.
The statement reads: “Multiple scientific studies show that flame retardants help save lives by stopping fires from starting or slowing their spread, making these products an integral component of a comprehensive approach to fire safety.
“Our members are committed to meeting and going beyond federal and international safety requirements. Consumers should know that all chemicals, including flame retardants, are subject to review by the US Environmental Protection Agency and other governmental agencies in this country and around the world.
“While the current regulatory system protects health and the environment, we agree it is time to update the federal chemical management system under the Toxic Substances Control Act. The bipartisan Chemical Safety Improvement Act pending in the US Senate and the draft Chemicals in Commerce Act currently being discussed in the House will strengthen our national chemical regulatory program, improve chemical safety nationwide and enhance cooperation between state governments and federal regulators. A strong, comprehensive federal chemical assessment and risk management program enhances the safety of all Americans.”
