Ludwigshafen, Germany - BASF, and CSM nv, a specialist in lactic acid and lactic acid derivatives, have announced their respective subsidiaries - BASF Future Business GmbH and PURAC - are joining in a development programme to produce bio-based succinic acid of commercial volumes and quality by the second quarter of 2010.
The companies will use a fully equipped fermentation and down-stream purification plant to demonstrate the economical production of succinic acid on an industrial scale, a 30 Sept joint statement said.
According to BASF and PURAC, bio-based succinic acid will be applied as a monomeric building block in a range of biopolymers such as biodegradeable polyesters.
"Combining our competencies, we open the door to make bio-based succinic acid a success story," said Thomas Weber, managing director of BASF Future Business. (RD)
