BASF materials are at home on the road

Ludwigshafen, Germany — Polyurethane is at the heart of a new concept camper van called VisionVenture. It was made by Hymer, and uses materials from  BASF.

The van, which BASF says is close to production, has a self-inflating pop-top roof. BASF says that this is a world first, and is one of the vans most striking features. It inflates in less than 60 seconds to create more living space. An Elastollan coating creates an outer wall that is resistant to water.

    Inside the van

Inside the van, Elastocoat C Spray-Gel is applied to mattress and cushion surfaces in variable thicknesses. The coating should ensure that the cushions remain fresh and cool even in the hottest weather. Haptex, a polyurethane system for imitation leather, is extensively used in the interior.

Elastoflex polyurethane and hemp fibres form cupboard doors and kitchen fronts.

The 3D printed wheel arches get a covering of Elastocoat to  protect against scratches and stone chips.

Slentite, the company's polyurethane aerogel, is being used to insulate refrigerators, door panels, window frame profiles and sub-floors.

Getting to bed is also more comfortable. The company's Infinergy material is being used, in jet black, for the steps and the bed frame. This gives pressure point relief, and looks good, according to BASF.

Infinergy forms a connection module that holds the slatted bed base together. The base is adjustable with good rebound properties.

Moulded pillows are made with BASF's CosyPUR feature. These are air-permeable, breathable and can be washed in a machine, it added.

Cellasto microcellular polyurethane materials are being used in a traditional and innovative NVH roles. It is used to reduce vibrations and block noise in the interior, drive or chassis. A special use of the material is to decouple vibration and structurally support the chassis. This helps with driving safety, dynamics and comfort, BASF said.
