Ludwigshafen, Germany – A new series of systems in BASF’s Elastoflex E range of polyurethane foam for PU foam-backed instrument panels allows significant weight reductions to be made.
Foam densities of about 120g/l are possible without altering the characteristics of the foam. Depending on component geometry weight savings of 30% are possible. The robust and fine cell structure means the Thin-Light system can be used for components with a profile less than 5mm. BASF said this opens new design options.
‘The new PU systems save weight, and are designed to incorporate sensors or control elements,’ said Marc Martin, who is automobile interiors expert in the performance materials division of BASF. ‘We’ve also managed to reduce the emission values even further and simplify the use of lasers for airbag weakening.’
