Ludwigshafen, Germany — BASF started operation of its 300kT/year TDI plant on 17 November 2015 at a ceremony attended by the Vice-Chancellor of Germany, Sigmar Gabriel.

BASF announced its intention to build a 300kT/year plant on the site in in 2012 and the project, which was delayed by an explosion, was completed a year later than planned.
The project included up-grading and expanding other production facilities for feedstocks at the site, said BASF. The TDI complex includes components which make dinitrotoluene, toluenediamine and toluene diisocyante. BASF has other TDI plants in Yeosu, South Korea; Caojiang, China and Geismar, Lousiana, all of which have a combined capacity of 480 kT/year.
Gabriel said that the EUR 1bn-plus investments is "an important building block in maintaining Germany's industrial basis."
