Ludwigshafen, Germany — BASF is starting the market preparation phase for the launch of  its Slentite polyurethane aerogel insulation material.

This follows the commissioning of a pilot plant for the panels in Lemforde, Germany in June 2015.

BASF said it is making a polyurethane aerogel into a heavy duty panel, which displays exceptional insulation performance. The company adds that because the product has an open porous structure, it provides moisture regulation and contributes to a pleasant interior climate. It can be used in new buildings and to upgrade existing buildings.

BASF's position is that the material is something which can be inserted between the window frame and masonry, making "modernisation more attractive." The company adds that it can be installed as thermal insulation wedges between walls and windows indoors and outdoors regardless of the frame material. "We now have the chance to eliminate thermal weak point in the building envelope, prevent damage, and enhance interior comfort," said Marc Frcike, Slentite project manager at BASF polyurethanes.

BASF said that the material will form a focus of its stand at K 2016.
