Ludwigshafen, Germany ‑ BASF said it will expand its range of thermoplastics polyurethanes with new food-contact grades from January 2016.
Sold under the Elastollan brand, the new TPUs will be designated FC, said the firm. BASF added that the grades are designed for injection moulded, calendered and extruded applications from conveyor belts and films to fabrics and hoses.
Food-contact polymers must be inert in contact with food and not alter taste or composition and their provenance must be fully documented, said BASF.
The company adds that the US and EU GMP systems mean that the use of the material has been analysed for its suitability; the risk of contamination has been analysed, and there is comprehensive documentation of process and quality control data.
In production, cleaning cycles are carried out and the materials can only come from approved suppliers, said the firm.
