Ludwigshafen, Germany – A thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) based on BASF’s Elastollan has been used to create a new bicycle inner tube less than half the weight of traditional models.
According to the chemical company, compared to butyl-based inner tubes, Schwalbe Evo Tube is up to 65% lighter and weighs between 68 and 76 grams.
Marcus Lambertz, Evo Tube product manager at Schwalbe, described the partnership as "focused and constructive".
"We are already working on developing more versions based on the same material," he added.
The tube, valve base and valve stem are all made from materials based on Elastollan and took two years to develop. It will be in stores at the end of 2015, the BASF press release said.
