Shanghai, China -- Polyurethane spray foam systems from BASF group, which offer energy-saving construction technologies for external wall and roof insulation, have been awarded a B1-Class Fire Resistance Performance Certificate by the National Center for Quality Supervision and Testing of Fire Building Material in China.
Large-scale tests for industrial fire and smoke density have shown that BASF's Elastospray PU foam meets the stringent B1 fire test classification, in accordance to China National Standard GB 8625 and GB 8627, said a 17 May announcement from the group.
"BASF is one of the few companies that have passed the stringent flame retardant test for its PU spray foams to obtain B1-class accreditation, "said HyoungSoon Moon, vice president, Polyurethane Systems, BASF Polyurethanes Asia Pacific, in the company statement.
"Together with Elastopor sandwich panels, BASF polyurethane solutions offer superior fire resistance" offering wider scope for building insulation uses throughout China," he added.
With this new certification, Elastospray can now be applied in a wider range of residential and public buildings in mainland China, the company notes. "Public buildings up to 50-m in height" are now within reach for the material, which, as a thermoset, shows better standing behaviour on walls, compared to thermoplastic insulation materials, said BASF.
B1 certification means that Elastospray exhibits "exceptional fire-retarding properties," with no compromise in thermal insulation and as an air barrier, the company said. It provides "an unrivaled combination of benefits in building insulation," BASF claims.
Field tests show that using rigid PU foam on walls, roofs, floors and ceilings of existing houses can cut energy consumption by more than 65 percent.
"BASF rigid foam systems have increasingly become a material of choice in China's construction sector due to higher energy efficiency and fire safety," said Moon, adding that, "Demand for quality buildings with the increasingly stringent building and fire safety regulations has spurred the popularity of PU spray foam in China's real estate sector.
