Leverkusen, Germany - Bayer MaterialScience AG is adding a 20 kilotonnes per annum polyurethanes dispersion (PUD) plant at its plant in Shanghai, China. The Bayer unit also announced 9 May that it is raising capacity at the site for various polyisocyanates. BMS will double capacity for aromatic Desmodur L to 20.5 ktpa, as well as doubling capacity for another aromatic type, Desmodur IL to 5.5 ktpa/ expanding production of the aliphatic type Desmodur N from its current 11.5 ktpa, "in line with market growth," said the announcement.
"With a new plant construction and two expansion measures inShanghai, we want to ensure long-term supply to our customers in thisregion and to keep pace with future market growth … as one of the world's leading producers of polyurethane coating and adhesive raw materials," said Dr Joachim Wolff,member of BMS' executive committee and head of its Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants business, in the company statement.
The PUD plant should be on stream in the second quarter of 2008. The Desmodur L expansion is planned for the second half of 2007: the unit came on stream in January 2005. Desmodur IL production will be increased by the end of 2007, while the Desmodur N expansion will come into effect by the start of 2008.
BMS did not give detailed costs for expanding these expansions at what it calls its "most important production site in the Asia-Pacific region for coating and adhesive rawMaterials" The measures are part of its total Euros 1800 million investment at Shanghai by 2012, BMS commented.
