Chennai, Tamil Nadu – Bosch will spend an unspecified but 'considerable amount' of a EUR 100m investment in a new domestic refrigerator production site in Chennai.
The company will also strengthen the technology centre and marketing operations at the site.
The company plans to build on its existing home appliances facility at Sriperumburdur, a suburb that is 40 km SW of Chennai, near the airport. It invested EUR 100m to make washing machines at the site in 2015. Sriperumburdur is an industrial and technology centre.
However, Bosch declined to share the exact amount it will invest in the site to make refrigerators. It said: 'Out of the EUR 100m, we are spending considerable amount on the manufacture of refrigerators.'
At the moment, the existing plant makes front-loading washing machines. About 500,000 refrigerators/year should come off the new production line in 2021.
'Our business is in a process of transformation. It is moving from a hardware focus, to a focus on services and data,' said Soumitra Bhattacharya, president of Bosch Group India.
