  • Counties may impose reexport tariffs
  • Washington DC – US mattress imports were 7.69m in the first seven months of 2019 almost unchanged from the same period in 2018. That number masks some significant shifts in exporting nations.

Vietnam exported almost twice as many mattresses in July 2019 to the US as it did in the first seven months of 2018. In that period, it exported 126,500 mattresses. In July 2019 alone Vietnam exported 249,000 units.

In the first seven months of 2019, Vietnam has exported 804,000 units to the US. Vietnamese authorities are considering imposing export duties on mattresses which arrive in the country and are re-exported without any work being done on them.

Similarly, Cambodia exported more mattresses to the US in July 2019 as it produced in the first seven months of 2018. The nation exported 89,500 in July 2019, this compares with 14,000 in the same month in 2018. Between January and July 2018 the nation exported 74,500 mattresses.

In July 2018, Malaysia exported five mattresses to the US, in July this year it exported 87,300.

At the same time the number of mattresses exported directly from china to the US fell to 11% of its volume in July 2018.

Import statistics show that 118,000 mattresses were shipped from China to the US in July 2019, compared with 1.05m in the same month in 2018.

In the first seven months of 2018, China exported 5.5m mattresses to the US. In the same period this year, shipments amount to 2.8m units.

Looking at the year to date despite these fluctuations, the total number of mattresses exported from Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and China was 7.68m units; in the first seven months of 2018 it was 7.60m.

The July export total from this cluster of countries was 1.13m, this compares with 1.37m in the same month last year.
