Beijing – China exported 2.4m mattresses and cushions fitted with cellular rubber or plastics in August 2020, down 46% from a year ago.
However, the value of exports in the month rose by 7% year-on-year, to $56.6m, according to China’s General Administration of Customs. The export tonnage climbed by 18% to 11.7kT.
Over the first eight months of 2020, China’s mattress exports were 17.3m units, down 18% from the same period in 2019.
Notwithstanding the year-on-year drop in the unit count, China’s mattress exports are still on the path to recovery, as the month-on-month fall is slowing.
The eight-month export value decreased by 30% year on year, to $316m, while weight contracted 33% to 63,400 tons. This contrasts to a 35% decline rate for value and a 39% decrease rate for weight over the first seven months.
Japan has been China’s largest overseas market in value since April, and it retained this rank in August, registering $10m-worth exports. The US was the runner-up at $6.9m, closely followed by Canada, at $6.8m.
Korea, in third place in July, fell to sixth in August with $3.4m-worth goods shipped. Vietnam rose to ninth from 24th in July, with $1.5m-worth of exports.
