    Nanjing, Jiangsu – ChemChina affiliate Bluestar Dongda plans to build a new polyether polyol project in Nanjing, Jiangsu, with 270kT/year capacity. The environmental impact assessment for the project started in May.

    With CNY 1.1bn ($172 m) investment earmarked, the facilities will be partially housed in the existing plant of another group subsidiary. This is 1,4- butanediol and tetrahydrofuran manufacturer Bluestar New Chemical Materials, located in Nanjing Chemical Industry Park.

    The three-year project will have 170 employees when in full operation after both phases are complete.

    Its planned capacity breaks down as follows:

    • 90kT/year polyol for high resiliency foam;
    • 120kT/year polymerised polyol; and
    • 60kT/year polyol for elastomers

    Bluestar Dongda currently has 300kT/year polyol capacity in its base in Zibo, Shandong, mostly for flexible foam. The new project will make it China’s largest polyol maker.

    The company shut down 90kT/year propylene oxide capacity in 2017 on acccount of environmental compliance issues.
