Amsterdam, Netherlands – Covestro is supplying recycled thermoplastic polyurethanes to environment-friendly phone maker Fairphone.
Covestro developed a range of Desmopan materials for the cover. These blend recycled and virgin material.
The company's 3095AU RC100 is a fully recycled version of the material that has a lower melting point and melt viscosity than virgin material. It is being used in the Fairphone 3 in green, grey and pink variations.
'We support Fairphone in achieving its sustainability goals,' said Nan Hu, Covestro’s VP of global industrial marketing for the electronic and electrical business.
Fairphone's VP of operations, Wayne Huang, said: 'This is a first step. We will continue to support Covestro in developing more sustainable materials.'
Fairphones are modular. All the parts can be replaced, and the OS can also be changed. Some models are sold in Europe with a screwdriver that will enable consumers to repair the phones or replace modules themselves.
