Monheim, Germany -- Speciality chemicals supplier Cognis has launched FoamStar A 46, which it says is a very effective organo-modified silicone defoamer, that can improve the film appearance properties of paints. It is an excellent defoamer for zero to 50 g/l VOC (volatile organic compound), premium paints with medium to low PVC (polyvinyl chloride) content, and enables manufacturers to meet consumers' needs for low-emission paints.
The new high-performance defoamer, FoamStar A 46, works against micro-foam and can be used in both highly tinted and high-gloss paints. Its high persistence and good dispersibility help to improve the film properties of VOC-free paints. In addition, FoamStar A 46 reduces the amount of defoamer needed by up to 50 percent, while also delivering very fast bubble break times, Cognis says.
FoamStar A 46 also offers sustainability benefits: it has a low VOC content of about two percent (according to US-EPA Method 24) and requires 30-50% less dosage leading to a lower VOC contribution.
"These properties are the result of us consistently implementing our Greenovating strategy throughout the entire research and product development process," said Shailesh Shah, Director Global Marketing Coatings, in a company statement.
