Monheim, Germany - Versamid PUR 2011, from specialty chemical supplier Cognis, is the latest product in the Versamid PUR range, ideal for today's "eat-on-the-go" culture, Cognis said 13 May.
Used as a stand-alone ink binder on flexible packaging, Versamid PUR 2011 is a TDI (toluene diisocyanate)-free and tin-free, non-migratory polyurethane resin based on new aliphatic urethane technology, the company said.
According to Cognis, Versamid PUR 2011 is ideal for use in retort and sterilisation packaging inks "exhibiting very good pigment dispersion, excellent heat resistance, hydrolysis stability and bond strength," the company said.
Cognis said that environmental pressure and legislation to reduce waste, the need to lower transport costs during an economic crisis and hectic lifestyles have seen the demand for flexible pouches and plastic containers grow steadily in recent years as a replacement for glass and tin packaging.
Bob LieBerman, Cognis product group manager, Dimers & Resins, said the market for retort pouches "holds immense potential for future growth."
He also commented on the environmental advantages of Versamid PUR 2011, commenting that increasing health awareness is driving the change towards new polymers that are free of both heavy metal catalysts and aromatic isocyanate building blocks. (RD)
