Alexandria, Virginia – More than 150,000 mattresses have been diverted from landfill in Connecticut via the Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress programme since its inception in May 2015 and the end of the state’s fiscal year on 30 June 2016.
Almost all of the benchmarks set out at the start of the Connecticut programme have already been met or exceeded. More than 2,800 tons of foam, steel and other materials have been recovered, and the collection network now has 101 free drop-off sites for used mattresses.
Connecticut was the first state to implement Bye Bye Mattress. Programmes have also now been established in California and Rhode Island.
