Enhanced battery life for electrical vehicles and digitalisation are other development areas.
'I'm thrilled to see our local innovation team is taking over more global responsibility for core technologies,' said Markus Steilemann, Covestro's CEO.
'It is obvious that China is on the way to becoming a leader in innovations for many important industry trends,' he added. 'This we want to support.'
The move to automotive is a shift in focus for the collaboration, which started in 2011 and initially involved eco-construction and material science. The Innovation Academy also offers funding and business incubation facilities for students that participate in an annual business plan competition.
