Beijing – Covestro has joined forces with China's Academy of Building Research since June 2019 to develop energy-efficient, flame-retardant polyurethane window frames.
The program is titled: Experimental Platform for Energy and Environment of Future Residential Buildings. It also involves Germany’s window and door technology supplier Gretsch-Unitas Group. Chinese composite materials maker Zhejiang Deyilong Technology is also in the group, said Covestro.
‘[Innovative energy efficient windows] are in high demand in China. Energy efficiency standards for buildings are becoming increasingly stringent,’ said Irene Li. She is head of PU R&D in the Asia Pacific, at Covestro.
Covestro said that its Badur PU grades are the basis for the three products made so far by the project.
Two of these are for standard casement windows. These have a whole-window thermal conductivity coefficient below 1.5w/m²k. A separate design with much greater insulation has also been developed. This has a conductivity coefficient below 0.8w/m²k.
