Shanghai, China – Covestro, formerly Bayer MaterialScience has inaugurated a 50kT/year (hexamethylene diisocyanate) HDI facility at the company's site in this city. Ground was broken for the HDI development on March 24, 2014.
Klaus Schafer, Covestro director responsible for production technology said: "The new plant features the latest technology; it is not only very safe and highly efficient, it also stands out because it is an environmentally friendly production process."
Covestro said the site's production process uses 60% less energy and up to 80% less solvent than conventional processes. It adds that the carbon footprint has been reduced by 70%. Material from the site will be sold into the automotive sector as Blulogiq, which is used to coat surfaces. It will also be used in the construction, textile, furniture and footwear industries, Covestro said.
