Leverkusen, Germany – Covestro is teaming up with rail freight specialist DB Cargo BTT to improve the transport of chemicals to and within Poland, notably MDI. The company said the new delivery route will save at least 70% of CO2 emissions compared to conventional end-to-end road transportation.
The chemicals are first taken from Covestro’s German production sites in tank containers by trucks that use HVO 100 biofuel to a nearby railway terminal, from where they are transported via rail to a distribution centre in Poland. Biofuel trucks are then used to deliver them to end customers within Poland.
Covestro’s MDI customers in Poland include Selena, which manufactures construction chemicals and products, many of them based on PU. The changes will assist customers such as Selena reduce their Scope 3 emissions by reducing the carbon footprint of the MDI.
Hanno Bruemmer, Head of Supply Chain and Logistics EMLA at Covestro, stated:
“The entire value chain must be involved to achieve our joint goal of climate neutrality by 2050,” said Hanno Bruemmer, head of supply chain and logistics for EMLA at Covestro. “Reliable, efficient and sustainable logistics for our ever more sustainable products are integral to this effort. We collaborate with our customers and transport companies to optimise the supply chain. This includes improving load capacity, selecting the best transport modes and routes, and introducing using sustainable and future-oriented energy sources like green electricity or HVO to replace fossil fuels.”
