Wetzel County, West Virginia – A tanker spilt Covestro isocyanates onto a state highway near its New Martinsville plant in the evening of Sunday 5 January. According to local emergency management authorities, the tanker became separated from the truck that was pulling it.
In a statement, Covestro stated that the tank truck owned and operated by Slay Transportation had an ‘equipment malfunction’, causing it to spill Mondur 445, a TDI/MDI blend, onto West Virginia State Route 2.
Local news reports claim that the material also spilt into nearby waterways, and several homes were evacuated overnight.
‘Slay Transportation is leading the response, and we are supporting their efforts,’ the Covestro statement said. ‘The safety of our employees, the community and the environment are of utmost importance to Covestro, and we will continue to provide support and technical expertise to assist with the response and remediation efforts.’
