Zhuzhou, Hunan – Covestro has emerged as the company supplying polyurethane systems for the world's largest wind blades. The German company is working with to Zhuzhou Times New Material Technology (TMT).

TMT is supplying 18 59.5m long blades to Envision, a wind turbine technology company. It will install them at a wind farm in Eastern China in July of this year.

The delivery follows extensive testing, including static and dynamic fatigue assessments. Prototype blades also underwent tests at a wind farm in central China in 2018.

Ulrich Liman, global head of R&D for the polyurethanes business at Covestro, said: 'We are very excited to be working with Envision and TmT on this first series order of PU wind blades in China. Polyurethane resin is a game-changing innovation.'

Zilu Liang, deputy chief engineer for wind power products at TMT, added: 'Compared to epoxy resin, polyurethane has advantages in costs and in production. We hope to further collaborate with Covestro to explore large-scale wind blades.'
