Princeton, New Jersey -- Medical device and pharmaceutical company Derma Sciences Inc. has launched a new foam wound dressing, Xtrasorb, a 4 May company statement said.

Designed for a greater performance than standard polyurethane foam dressings, Xtrasorb features a patented super-absorbent polymer (SAP) bonded to the outer-facing portion of the dressing. This absorbs "significantly more fluid than market leading dressings," locking the fluid into the dressing and "greatly reducing the chances of wound deterioration," Derma Sciences said.

"Foam dressings are the largest category of moist wound care dressings, and our product outperforms its competitors on multiple clinical efficacy dimensions," said Edward Quilty, ceo of Derma Sciences, in a company announcement.

"We expect that incremental sales from Xtrasorb Foam will help us hit our advanced wound-care sales goals for 2010, and are confident that we will continue to grow sales in 2011 and 2012 as we begin to take market share," he added.

New-Jersey-based Derma already produces standard PU foam dressings including its Hydrocell and Sorbacell product ranges. (RD)
