Direct Chinese exports of mattresses to US fell 93% in August

    Washington, DC – Chinese mattress exports to the US totalled 67,500 units in August. This is a fall of 93% compared to the total of 992,430 units in August 2018.

    Imports from China in the first eight months of 2019 were 3.89 m units. In the same period in 2018, China exported 6.51m units to the US. 

    Looking at global sources, the US imported 1.25m mattresses in August, down by 114,100 units or 8.4% on the same month in 2018. 

    The figures from US Customs show that in the first 8 months of 2019, a total of 8.94m units were imported. This is 0.4%, or 31,500 units, lower. 

    The number of mattresses imported from Vietnam reached 2.89 m in August. A total of 272,503 units were imported in August. This is an increase of 16.75 times on the same month in 2018. 

    Indonesia was the second largest exporter to the US in August. The country shipped 197,160 units to the US. In August 2018, a total of 7,310 units were shipped. In the first eight months of this year mattress shipments to the US from Indonesia reached 612,000 units.

    A total of 145,490 mattresses were imported from Malaysia in August. In the same month in 2018,  the number was 47. 

    Mattress makers in Mexico shipped 144,710 mattresses north of the border in August. This compares with 188,7101 thousand in the same month one year previously.
