Auburn Hills, Michigan - Dow Automotive has launched an energy-absorbing foam which it claims is better performing, lighter and more cost effective than polyurethane.
The company said its new Impaxx foam material was 50 percent lighter than polyurethane and reduced space by 30 percent.
According to Dow, a business unit of Dow Chemicals, Impaxx required no tooling costs and minimal lead time, allowing last-minute design changes.
''Larger and deeper door pockets are now possible in door trims,'' a company statement said.
''Similarly, headliners can be designed to provide additional occupant headroom, enhancing passenger comfort.''
