Wesel, Germany - Downstream users of chemicals heard what their obligations are under the REACH Regulation at the first BYK Downstream Users' Day, held at the end of September by BYK Additives & Instruments.
The most important duty of downstream users, BYK said, is to minimise handling risks and to focus on exposure scenarios. "With a production or import volume for a substance of more than 10 metric tons annually, the manufacturer or importer must produce a chemical safety report as part of the registration process," the statement said, adding that in some cases this may include producing "costly" and "complex" exposure scenarios.
"Especially where their obligations as downstream users are concerned, our customers still need clarification," said Gerald Kirchner, head of innovation management at BYK.
To assist customers with this task, BYK put on a series of lectures, exposure scenarios, and related implications for the 40 participants in attendance at the Downstream Users' Day. The company closed the day by giving hands-on training under the supervision of BYK's REACH specialists. (RD)"
