Suwon, South Korea – Leather cloth maker Duksung has become the first coated fabric maker to join the partner manufacturer program for Bayer MaterialScience’s (Covestro) Insqin PU coatings.
Nicholas Smith, BMS global head of textiles coatings, said that the program aims to increase clarity along the supply chain from BMS to the ultimate specifiers of coated fabrics, in a telephone conversation with UTECH-polyurethane.com
Smith explained that the Insqin materials are water based and so reduce the amount of water needed compared to traditional PU leather dispersions by about 95% and energy by 50%. Traditionally polyurethane is dispersed in dimethylformamide (DMF), which is described as toxic under the EU’s Dangerous Substances Directive (67/548/EEC). Products made using DMF require considerable amounts of rinsing to ensure its removal from finished leather cloth, said Smith.
Insqin is supplied as a high molecular weight material suspended in water, said Smith. He added that it is made commercially at BMS’ plants in China, where about 90% of the global production of polyurethane leather cloth is based. Insqin was launched in 2014.
The market for polyurethane leather cloth is growing at around 9%/year, Smith said. He added that consumers and brand owners are increasingly demanding more transparency along the production chain. “Brand owners want to source new sustainable materials, and materials producers need to understand their needs better, ” Smith said. He added that the partner manufacturing program is designed to clarify the supply chain and verify production processes through third party validation.
Bong Geun Lee, Duksung, ceo said joining the programme would give his firm “validation of our production of sustainable materials from a leader in conformity assessment.” Lee added he hoped that this would lead to “new business opportunities by being recommended to brand owners interested in sourcing from more sustainable materials.”
In the financial year ending 31 December 2014 Duksung had revenue of Won82.3bn ($72m) and generated a net income of Won 759m
