White Plains, New York -- Polyurethane fuel tank supplier Engineered Fabrics Corp. (EFC) has been picked by the US Department of Defence to supply fuel tanks to the US Air Force (USAF).
The subsidiary of K & F Industries Holdings Inc. has agreed to deliver sets of flexible bladder fuel tanks for about 90 KC-135 refuelling aircraft in a three-year deal worth $38 million, a statement from the firm said.
Deliveries are expected to start in the first quarter of 2007.
The agreement follows three years of cooperation between EFC and USAF aimed at upgrading and improving the performance of KC-135's fuel containment system, the EFC statement said.
Capable of refuelling long-range bombers, fighters, cargo and reconnaissance aircraft in mid-air, the KC-135 carries about 19 000 gallons (72 000 litres) of fuel, using 16 internally-mounted flexible bladder fuel tanks that run the length of its fuselage in addition to six integral sealed tanks within the plane's wing structure.
