Essen, Germany - Evonik Industries is initiating a Euro 45-million ($577 million) investment in Brazil with its plans to build a new facility for producing the bleaching and oxidation agent hydrogen peroxide at the Triunfo petrochemical complex near Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, the company said 29 Oct.
The facility will have an annual capacity of 40 kilotonnes and is expected to be operational in early 2011, Evonik said. Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in mid-2009.
"The new facility in Porte Alegre will allow us to participate in Brazil's dynamic market growth and to expand our excellent world-leading position," said Werner Müller, chairman of Evonik.
Hydrogen peroxide is applied in the synthesis of propylene oxide, mainly used in the production of polyurethane precursors with the resulting polyurethanes being used the car seat, cushion and furniture markets, the company added.
