Mumbai, India — Expanded Polymer Systems is expanding hybrid polyol capacity in Gujarat by 9 kT/year in a project due to complete at the end of 2019.
Expanded Polymer Systems to raise polyols capacity by 25%
'We are investing around $1.6 m in raising capacity from 36 kT/year to 45 kT/year by December 2019,' said Mukesh Bhuta, chairman and managing director, Expanded Polymer Systems. Bhuta was talking on the sidelines of the PU Innovation Day at Mumbai recently. The Indian Polyurethane Association organised the day.
The company operates two polyols facilities at Pawne Industrial Area, Navi Mumbai and at Dahej in Gujarat.
'We have a much larger production and bulk storage facility in Dahej (a port in Gujarat) spread over 50,000 m2. This is 40 km from Bharuch, on the Mumbai-Delhi corridor. Established in 2010, it has enough space for further expansion,' Bhuta explained. The additional capacity could help the company grow its business in the middle east market, Bhuta added.
'We are keen to expand overseas market and part of expanded capacity is marked solely for exports. The expansion of 9,000 tons splits with 3,000 tons for overseas market and 6,000 tons for domestic commitments,' Bhuta added. Currently, exports are 8-10% of the total output, he estimated. The Middle East, Southeast Asia and Europe markets are key destinations.
The project will be split into two parts; the first phase of 3,000 tonnes is planned to be completed by February 2019. The remaining 6,000 tonnes by December 2019.
Mumbai-headquartered Expanded Polymer Systems started operation by blending rigid polyols. By 1991 the company had developed in-house technology for polyester- and polyether-based polyols. This new technology enabled it to become a preferred supplier to companies operating in the refrigeration and general insulation markets. Later in the 1990s, Expanded Polymer Systems developed products for the - coatings, adhesives, sealants, footwear and slabstock markets.
The company also produces bio-polyols and hybrid polyether-polyester polyols. Meanwhile, away from materials, the Expanded Polymer Systems also promotes polyurethane foam processing equipment from Cannon of Italy in the Indian market.
