Loudon, Tennessee - Two US foam manufacturers have earned CertiPUR-US Certification by meeting stringent environmental, health and safety guidelines for foam used in upholstered furniture and bedding.
Up-to-now, the companies with products that qualify for CertiPUR-US Certification are: Future Foam of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Hickory Springs Manufacturing Co. Inc. in Tennessee, said a 19 Feb statement. A number of companies are currently in the evaluation process, and an up-to-date list is available at www.certipur.us
Several major flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) manufacturers have volunteered to meet "voluntary product content and performance requirements," as specified by CertiPUR-US, CertiPUR said. The CertiPUR-US programme is based on guidelines developed by the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam Inc. (AFPF).
"We envision that as interest in environmental responsibility, health and consumer product safety increases, consumers will be demanding bedding, sofas and upholstered chairs that contain CertiPUR-US-certified foams," said Robert Luedeka, AFPF executive director.
"The CertiPUR-US certification is open to all foam manufacturers," explained Luedeka. The CertiPUR-US certification process examines FPF products through independent laboratory tests for VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and chemical analysis. Compliant products pass the laboratory testing requirements and are certified to be manufactured without use of prohibited content such as ozone-depleting CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) fire retardants, lead, mercury and other materials of concern.
CertiPUR-US also sets baseline requirements for foam physical performance that can contribute to foam comfort and durability.
Following concerns over some products manufactured in China, Ludeka said that the US FPF industry is working hard to improve its environmental footprint, adding that, "the CertiPUR-US programme provides a way for furniture and bedding manufacturers, retailers and consumers to differentiate foam-cushioning products."
