Georgetown, Massachusetts - US packaging group UFP Technologies Inc. has bought Stephenson & Lawyer Inc., a maker of foam plastic products which specialises in technical polyurethane foams. The two groups' foam expertise is complementary since UFP's speciality is in polyethylene foams. S&L had sales of about $13 million in 2007, said Georgetown-based UFP, in an 18-Jan statement.
"Since its inception in 1946, S&L has been a respected leader in the fabrication of polyurethane foams," said Jeffrey Bailly, chairman, ceo, and president of UFP Technologies, in the statement. Bailly added that S&L's well-equipped, 250 000-sq.ft (23 000 sq.m) factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan, "adds significantly to our manufacturing capabilities"
The combined operations can "provide a broader range of solutions to our growing customer base, and unlock S&L's tremendous growth potential," Bailly continued.
According to Stephenson & Lawyer's president, Con Oswald, "UFP's diverse capabilities, large sales force, and reputation for quality are a great fit for S&L."
UFP's polyethylene foams expertise also complements S&L's primary strength in technical urethane foams, Oswald pointed out, in the UFP announcement.
In packaging, UFP Technologies calls itself "a leading designer and manufacturer of interior protective packaging solutions using moulded fibre, vacuum-formed plastics, and moulded and fabricated foam plastics."
In addition, the company also makes engineered components by laminating, moulding, and fabricating technologies. Primary sectors it serves include the automotive, computers and electronics, medical, aerospace and defense, consumer, and industrial markets.
