Pennsylvania, US – Four of Covestro’s US sites are now running solely on renewable electricity, reducing their Scope 2 electricity emissions to net zero. This has been made possible by a virtual power purchase agreement with energy company Ørsted which allowed them to allocate renewable energy certificates.
Danish-headquartered Ørsted has a significant presence in the US renewable energy market. The agreement provides Covestro with 90MW of renewable energy capacity, which will eliminate about 90kT of the company’sCO2 emissions a year.
The four sites are located in Channelview, Texas; South Deerfield, Massachusetts; New Martinsville, West Virginia; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company’s Baytown, Texas facility has been allocated the remainder of the certificates in the agreement. South Deerfield, New Martinsville and Pittsburgh have now also achieved complete net-zero Scope 2 emissions, Covestro said.
“Even in a persistently challenging market environment, we are working towards our goal of climate-neutral production by 2035 and are consistently implementing our strategy of fully aligning ourselves with the circular economy,” said Thorsten Dreier, Covestro’s CTO. “By leveraging renewable energy, we’re not just reducing our carbon footprint – we’re actively shaping a brighter future for our industry.”
