Wixom, Michigan -- Frimo Group GmbH said it is investing $5 million in a new technology centre for its North American operations that will allow the company to offer its full production range to automakers in the region.
The centre will be housed at the Wixom headquarters of Frimo Inc., the company said in an 18 Aug news release. It will join a recently expanded technology centre in Lotte, Germany -- also the location for the global headquarters of the auto supplier -- and another centre under construction in Shanghai.
Frimo combines a variety of processes and tooling to create Class A surface interior parts for automakers and interior parts makers. It posted about $200 million in 2009 global sales.
The Wixom centre will combine rapid prototyping, polyurethane processing, thermoforming, laminating, trimming, PU spray and PU foam-in-place operations for soft trim.
Specialised equipment at Wixom includes astate-of-the-art PUReLine polyurethane spray system as well aspolyurethane rigid and semi-flexible foam-in-place metering equipmentand tooling. It also has FlexTrim router process equipment and fixturing and invisibleair bag scoring equipment and fixturing.
The centre also has two secure trial test-bays so that customers can run pre-production prototypes to ensure confidential, quick andtrouble-free launches.
As a result, the Wixom unit will be able to "provide tooling and production facilities for a complete range ofprocesses used to develop interior products such as instrument panels, door trim, consoles, headliners, seats, headrests and more," the company said.
