Amberg, Germany - Grammer AG announced 2 July that it is supplying front and rear headrests and armrests and the center console, for the new Volkswagen Touareg. The Bavarian automotive interiors and seating systems manufacturer said that after supplying the center console for the Passat, it is "once again proving its ability to develop and supply complex components in addition to deliver individual parts."
The Toureg uses Grammer's new generation of headrests, where it claims to have developed and manufactured the first one with integrated and simultaneous adjustability along the X and Z axis. This means the headrest is no longer adjusted in a linear fashion, but rather can be "positioned within an adjustment plane," Grammer said.
Both driver and front-seat passenger can quickly and easily adjust headrest height and position it as close as possible to the back of the head, using the button on the side. The closer the head is to the headrest, the more effective is the protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision, Grammer stresses.
The three back headrests are L-shaped and their height can also be adjusted to account for the size of rear-seat passengers.
The rear armrest is designed as a fully upholstered component, featuring two cup-holders, and can be completely folded into the backrest.
Grammer says it put "a great deal of work into the design of the centre console." This has the options of a single base or two separate, longitudinally adjustable armrests for driver and passenger. This adjustment allows both occupants to individually find the most comfortable armrest positions. By depressing the unlocking mechanism, the armrest can be set forward and back by up to 110 mm.
The storage compartment has nearly 6 litres capacity, while a cup holder has two settings for cups of up to 40 oz. The console also has an ashtray, controls for driver and interior climate controls, several toggle switches and the interior cover for the shifter.
The rear section of the console can feature storage compartments, a climate control station, 12 volt and 230 volt outlets and back-seat vents.
The main body of the console is injection-moulded in two parts, which allows different colour combinations. The storage compartments are flock-lined to prevent rattling. A total of 48 color and material variations are on offer.
