Pune, Maharashtra – China’s household appliance maker Haier on 16 November inaugurated an expansion at its India manufacturing site in Pune, the firm said.
The site was expanded from local a refrigerator plant Haier acquired in 2007 with 300,000 unit/year capacity. The expansion project broke ground in June 2016 with INR 4.9bn ($75m) investment, according to local reports at the time.
With a total area of 160,000 m2, the site now has 3.8m unit/year capacity for various appliances, including 1.8m unit/year for refrigerators, creating 2,000 jobs, said report by China’s state-run media Xinhua.
Entering the Indian market 13 years ago, Haier now has 34 sales centres across the country and celebrated the production of its 5 millionth refrigerator in India at the expansion project’s inauguration.
With the new facilities coming on stream, 96% of Haier’s refrigerators sold in India will be produced locally, said the company’s website.
