By David Reed, UT EditorKnoxville, Tennessee-While combustion-modifying agents-also known as flame retardants-play a key role in improving the fire performance of flexible polyurethane foams, the US Polyurethane Foam Association points out that many other factors are important, so the process becomes complex, with many decision-making factors. To help processors, purchasers and specifiers of foams understand this, the PFA's latest InTouch bulletin covers the key aspects which should be considered. It points out that the addition of CM agents may affect the comfort, physical strength, and durability of the foams produced, as well as the manufacturing process itself. Other factors influencing the combustion behaviour of foams in upholstered furniture and bedding, such as fabric type, and the use of FPF in combination with fibrous filling materials, are also discussed.Copies of the InTouch bulletin are available to download from the PFA's website:
