Dusseldorf, Germany – 2017 Adhesives sales were up 5% at laundry and personal care products-to-reactive polyurethane systems company Henkel.

    Hans Van Bylen

They reached EUR 9.4 bn in 2017, compared with EUR 9 bn in 2016.

Operating profit in the adhesive technologies business unit rose 6.1% to EUR 1.7 bn, the company said. Adjusted return on sales in the division reached 18.8%. Henkel said that this is 'an all time high'.

Within the business unit, the company added: 'We posted a very strong increase in sales in our transport and metal business area. This was substantially attributable to our numerous applications for automotive manufacturers and their body, powertrain and interior suppliers.'

Sales increased significantly in the general industry business area. The company said these sales were boosted by business in industrial markets and vehicle maintenance, repair and overhaul.

Henkel added that sales in adhesive technologies are expected to grow by between 2% and 5.5% over the next four years.

Across the business, sales in 2017 were just over EUR 20 bn, up by 7% on 2016.

Hans Van Bylen, Henkel's CEO, said: 'We reached new record sales and earnings and achieved our financial targets for the year… we achieved record margins and new highs in earnings per share.'
