Sankt Augustin, Germany – The robotic machinery that facilitates the production of a lightweight roof for the Smart ForTwo car will be showcased at UTECH 2015.
The roof – developed by Fehrer Composite Components – consists of polyurethane, glass fibre and paper honeycomb and is coated with a thermoplastic outer skin.
According to Hennecke, the roof provides the same stability as the series roof of its predecessor but is 30% lighter.
“Compared to traditional composite parts, the individual layers are not bonded in a complex, multi-step process, but in one single operation.”
Hennecke said the surface finish can be demoulded without requiring further processing.
