Anaheim, California – The Hilton Anaheim hotel has embarked on a massive mattress recycling project. In all, 2589 used Serta Perfect Sleeper mattresses from the property’s more than 1500 guest rooms are being recycled. It represents Hilton’s largest mattress recycling initiative in the US to date.
The hotel teamed up with Virginia-based Global Sustainability Solutions, which had managed previous recycling projects for the chain. Nearly 150,000kg of solid waste was involved.
About 95% of the mattress and box spring components were to be recycled and re-purposed. Typical end-uses include tools, tempered flooring, oil filters and carpet padding. Recycling of mattresses is a legal requirement in California.
“Our company has an impressive history of environmental stewardship and Hilton Anaheim is doing its part to live up to those values by reducing the amount of solid waste going into our landfills,” said Shaun Robinson, the hotel’s general manager.
“Hilton is committed to reducing waste generated by our properties, and programs such as this one allow us to deliver against that commitment,” added Judy Pines, Hilton’s director of sustainability and responsible sourcing. “As our strategic partner, GSS will help us to achieve that objective at properties nationwide.”
