The Woodlands, Texas -- Huntsman Corp. introduced various new products at the American Coatings Show (8-10 May, in Indianapolis, Indiana).
On the urethanes side, Huntsman Polyurethanes introduced Suprasec 9114 and 9109 polyurea prepolymer isocyanates based on MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate).
These materials are designed for use in combination with resin blends containing Jeffamine polyetheramines and/or Jeffol polyether polyols to make high-performance polyurea and polyurea/polyurethane hybrid coatings.
Huntsman said these products can give superior low-temperature stability, resulting in longer seasons for applying polyurethane and polyurea. It also provides excellent substrate adhesion, abrasion resistance, compression strength and crack-bridging properties.
Huntsman Performance Products launched Jeffamine RFD-270 amine, a novel aliphatic amine containing both rigid (cycloaliphatic) and flexible (polyetheramine) segments in the same molecule. RFD stands for "rigiflex diamine" and Huntsman claims this offers "a unique formulating option for composites, coatings, and adhesives." When used for curing epoxy resin, this product can provide synergistic processing and cured resin performance advantages relative to simple mixtures of polyetheramines (PEAs) and cycloaliphatic amines.
On the pigments side, Huntsman Pigments unveiled a new brand of Altiris infrared reflecting pigments. These give coatings and polymer products the power to reflect solar energy in a wide range of colours, even dark and vibrant ones, claims the company.
As a result, structures with exterior coatings containing Altiris pigments reflect the sun's energy. This helps keep building interiors cooler, reducing the energy needed for air-conditioning and cutting associated costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Another benefit is that coatings that stay cooler suffer less heat cycling stress, which helps prevent delamination and peeling, potentially increasing product lifespan.
Finally Huntsman Advanced Materials launched Aradure 2978 epoxy curing agent. This is aimed at two-component, ambient curing coating and flooring systems that require good aesthetic properties, good blush and early water spotting resistance. Huntsman says its "unique combination of long pot life and fast cure offers a distinct advantage over typical curing agents based on cycloaliphatic polyamines, such as isophorone diamine."
