The Woodlands, Texas -- Huntsman Corp.'s spray polyurethane foam (SPF) technology has been used to insulate a home in Beverly, Massachusetts, built by Cleantech Homes llc to represent "one of the most energy efficient, sustainable homes in America," according to Huntsman.
During construction, Cleantech used two-pound CertaSpray closed-cell foam insulation from CertainTeed Corp., which is based on Huntsman's SPF technology, for the home's interior thermal insulation. CertaSpray was applied on the walls, roof underlay and attic to protect the home against heat, cold, air infiltration, moisture and sound.
The house is being evaluated for a LEED Platinum Home rating, and iscurrently being used as a teaching centre that showcases sustainablebuilding techniques and design, as well as new products andconstruction materials used in high-performance homes. LEED stands forLeadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and offers a third-partycertification programme, developed by the US Green Building Council(USGBC).
"CertaSpray foam insulation offers outstanding energy efficiency and contributes to a healthy indoor air quality, enhanced moisture management and excellent acoustical control -- all critical factors in green building projects," said Lionel Rossignol, product manager, CertainTeed Insulation, in the Huntsman statement.
Homes insulated using CertaSpray will typically use 30 to 50 percent less energy, when compared to under-insulated homes, said Huntsman's press statement. This can reduce the need for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as resulting in a reduction in HVAC equipment costs in new home construction.
Homeowners that use CertaSpray foam insulation can also take advantage of an existing energy tax credit of up to $1500 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
"Energy efficiency is at the forefront of new home construction and home retrofit projects. Architects and builders are looking for innovative ways to build more energy efficient homes, and consumers are looking for ways to reduce their energy bills. This home clearly demonstrates how consumer demand can be satisfied with innovative construction materials, including SPF," commented Monica Ntiru Karamagi, marketing manager, Huntsman Polyurethanes.
