Everberg, Belgium - A new technology for fire-retarding polyisocyanurate (PIR) sandwich panels will be launched by Huntsman at this year's UTECH Europe 2009 exhibition and conference, to be held in Maastricht, The Netherlands, 31 March - 2 April (Huntsman stand 1210).
Major polyurethanes supplier Huntsman also said in a 27 Jan release that it plans "a strong exhibition presence," at this important polyurethanes event, as well as presenting seven papers at the wide-ranging three-day conference.
Discussing the new PIR approach, called Inspire, Nick Webster, European vice president for Huntsman's Polyurethanes division said: "PIR sandwich panels currently have a small market share in the European sandwich panel market, but we expect this technology will grow rapidly in the coming years, driven by new fire legislation and insurance company requirements."
Inspire PIR technology differs from competitor's PIR products by not requiring an adhesive layer between the foam and the steel facings. It offers easy foam processing and a competitive density - both in line with European market requirements, Huntsman said. Inspire will allow Huntsman the opportunity to "take a significant share of this more specialised and higher quality panel business," Webster added.
Huntsman will offer three Inspires, with low, medium and high isocyanate-index, to suit customer needs.
PIR foam has many of the advantages of PU foam, such as light weight, excellent thermal conductivity and moisture resistance, but with superior fire properties. PIR production involves a higher proportion of MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate), resulting in a thermally more stable product. Before Huntsman's latest development, adhesion of the PIR to steel facings was more problematic than it is with polyurethane, so an extra adhesive layer was required.
Huntsman will present a technical paper on Insire PIR entitled "New Inspire adhesive-free PIR technology for sandwich panels," -- written by Alexander Abati, Domenico Stragapede, Josep Gimeno and Kristof Dedecker -- at the UTECH Europe conference at 15.50 on Tuesday 31 March (Rigid Foam Session A, Auditorium B).
Other products and services Huntsman Polyurethanes will be showcasing at UTECH Europe 2009 include materials for insulation, ACE (adhesives, coatings and elastomers), footwear, automotive, bedding and furniture, and engineered wood products.
