The Woodlands, Texas -- Huntsman has developed two UV-protected grades of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) for offshore, oil and gas, and mining wire and cable applications.
The polyether-based TPU materials – part of Huntsman’s Irogran product range – were designed to jacket heavy duty equipment cables in harsh industrial environments.
Rhona Watson, Development Center manager, Americas, said the “specialised UV package demonstrates Huntsman close’s alignment to market needs.” Oil rigs, offshore wind farms and underground applications are among applications the firm said its innovation would benefit.
The company said its innovation was driven by demand for higher performance levels from cable jacketing materials customers in the US. The product’s UV package is not listed as a substance of very high concern in REACH regulations, it added.
The two grades are Irogran A 85 P 4394 UV DP, with 85 Shore A hardness of 85 Shore A and Irogran A 92 P 4637 UV DP, with 92 Shore A hardness.
Both grades are entering final launch stage and will be available globally.
