London - IAL Consultants, a UK-based market research company, has recently published: A Global Overview of the Polyurethane Dispersions (PUD) Market.
IAL estimate the global market for PUDs in 2009 at 227.3 kilotonnes with an expected growth of around 5.2 percent annually over the next five years, reaching around 292.3 kt by 2014, a 29 Oct IAL statement said.
In terms of applications, use of PUDs in the leather and textile industries is expected to show strong growth, around 6.2 percent annually, while slower growth is expected in industrial coatings - around 4.5 percent annually. Growth of PUDs in adhesives and fibre glass is "expected to fall within this range," IAL said.
Around 103 kt of PUD will be produced in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, despite increasing competition from Asia and Latin America, the research company said, adding that there has been a trend towards consolidation in Europe.
Alternatively, in the Americas production is strongly geared towards industrial coatings, which accounts for around 43 kt of a total 66.9 kt in 2009 - although, leather and textile PUD output tends to be concentrated more in South America and Mexico, the statement said.
In Asia-Pacific, China is the most important driving force in a fragmented industry and is the source of many PUD manufacturing expansion plans. Japan's PUD industry on the other hand is more organised and home to regional and multinational players, IAL commented.
In a separate statement, IAL has announced the release of two new volumes for its polyurethane sector directory: Directory of Polyurethane Systems Houses in Europe, Middle East & Africa and Directory of Polyurethane Systems Houses in Asia Pacific.
The directories give details on four of the big PU producers and a number of systems houses across each region.
