Dublin -- Around ten manufacturers produced nearly 7m tonnes of MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) last year, according to new research.
Researchers behind the Global and Chinese Polyurethane Industry Chain Report found that on capacity, China’s Wanhua Chemical, Bayer and BASF contributed 62.9% to the world's total.
The report also reports that the world’s polyurethane capacity is mainly available in China – a third of the total, the United States and Europe.
As for TDI (toluene diisocyanate), it reports the 2013 global TDI capacity at around 2.6 million tonnes, more than 70% of which was contributed by Bayer, BASF, Wanhua Chemical subsidiary BorsodChem, Japan’s Mitsui and China’s Cangzhou Dahua.
The global TDI capacity is mainly distributed in China - which holds 33% of the world’s share according to the report - the United States and South Korea.
Bayer, Dow, Shell and BASF dominate the world’s PPG (propylene glycol) industry, said the report. In China, researchers found limited PPG capacity but named SINOPEC Shanghai Gaoqiao, Shandong Dongda Chemical and Nanjing Hongbaoli as the key players.
